Start with Sun Jian or Cao Cao if you want to learn all the differences of 3K. Purple generals are your tanks that you send in to stop red and green generals from destroying your army. Green generals are your duelists and are good for taking out high priority generals before they can do too much damage. Blue Generals are extremely fragile, can't duel, but offer many useful ranged skills and passive bonuses. Keep them out of combat as they fall easily, and the morale hit will likely route your entire army. Yellow Generals boost morale and have supporting skills.
To Further go into general specializations, Red Generals are good at melee- send them into the front lines to wipe out entire units. A strong Army composition is usually a R/B/G general, with Yellow replacing Red (Usually only heroes like Cao Cao or Liu Bei, who are stealth Red/Green) and Purple replacing Green when needed. Red = Shock cavalry, Blue = ranged, Green = Spears, Purple = Sword/axe infantry, Yellow = Melee Cavalry. Every general can recruit basic bitch troops, but can only recruit the upper tiers of their element. Generals are also separated into 5 colors and specialize in certain troops. Then you sprinkle your military (red) and public order (yellow) buildings in between as you need them. Luxuries and trade (blue) want blue buildings. Industry/Mines (Purple) want purple buildings. Farmland/Pastures (Green) want green buildings. Everything is also color coded to make it easier. Build your commanderies around what resources the have access too.
