This was somewhat alleviated with new playfields added in the expansion Rise of the Godslayer, as well as some adventure packs later on, so one did have well-designed questing playfields for the majority of the leveling process (also, XP potions) and did not have to grind anymore to reach endgame. Namely, two things: bad optimization (the game still doesn't run very smoothly on a lot of setups/settings) and a dearth of content for certain parts of leveling.ĪoC was rushed by the publishers, so that the devs had spent a lot of time on the starting zone (which is fantastic, and largely considered to be one of the best in any MMO), as a result large stretches of content after level 20 until 80 felt pretty empty and generic in comparison.
The issues which plagued the game back in 2008 are still quite relevant today. The community is quite active and there are plenty of guilds to join, in various languages. They have a raid finder now as well as regular world boss events, so there is actually fairly accessible and easy group content even for very casual players at max level. It has some fantastic story and lore, if you're a Howard fan, you will love the world. The subscription is also pretty cheap nowadays at I believe 8 € and grants access to everything.

It's free-to-play, and you will have dozens of hours of enjoyable gameplay for free before you would want to spend any money to gain more playfields, classes etc if you so choose. Some unique class options that you won't find in other MMOs, like a sword-wielding cloth-wearing fire mage who turns into a demon on demand, and healers who deal heal through dealing more damage and play in melee.Īn absolutely fantastic soundtrack throughout basically all of the game and the expansions. The graphics, while outdated at times for the models and certain areas feel barren (more on that later), are still beautiful in most areas that gameplay is concentrated in. Pros: AoC has a very unique combat system which combines tab targetting for spells with action combat (arrow keys are your directional weapon swings, and you execute combos later for more damage). In my opinion, Age of Conan is still pretty unique and well worth trying, especially as a Conan fan. However, i've also played far more WoW and been deep into most other MMOs out there over the past 20 years. I'm a huge Age of Conan fan, so take my feedback with a grain of salt considering my bias.

ĪoC is probably one of the few MMO's that could use a remake and garner a big following.but never going to happen i'm afraid.Īnyway going off topic here, in short yes you can and should play it (before it gets taken offline lol) just don't invest too much money into it. Personally i loved the game pre-expantion for it's 3 different regional themes (Aquillonian / Stygian / Cimmerian ) and while the expantion theme of Khitan is great, being stuck on it for "endgame" all those years didn't do it favors.Īge of Conan had a ton of potential, but sadly bugs, exploits and balance issues not being fixed fast enough made it loses traction with PvP communities, and Warhammer being released a few months after it was a blow they never manage to recover from until the Khitai expansion, and then again Funcom didn't listen to the playerbase especially on the grind and balance issues.
However stay off PvP servers unless you want to get favorized by veterans as gear discrepancies is massive. However for people who never played it before i really recommend it as they nailed the atmosphere and combo combat can be fun, especially for "hyuge conan fans" it should be at least be played with one character. It's been on maintenance mode for a few years now with some minor content released here & there.
